Virunga mountain ranges is a chain of volcanoes that protects the endangered mountain gorillas and also home to the rare golden monkeys. Mgahinga gorilla national park is home to three of them and that is:
Mountain Muhavura is the tallest of all the volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park with elevation of about 4,127m above sea level. Also known as Mt Muhabura, is an inactive volcano in the virungas between Uganda and Rwanda and is the third highest of all the eight major volcanoes found in the chain for volcanoes which is part Albertine rift valley.
It will definitely reward you with some of the Albertine rift valley bird endemics which you will add on the crater lake at the top of it. With scenic views too!
Mountain Gahinga is the smallest of the three in the park, with elevation of about 3,474m above sea level. Originated from a local word “Gahinga” which means a pile of stones.
Mountain Sabinyo, being elevated at about 3,505m above sea level, this is the most challenging to hike of all the three because of its steep trails and edges but it’s the most beautiful still.
As the saying goes that “to be challenged is not dying” mountain sabinyo gives you a chance of being in three countries without a visa. Imagine being in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo at the same time when at the top of this beautiful mountain.
So for this, it’s you to decide which one to hike! Note: all mountains usually take about 9-12 hours’ hike depending on your fitness levels. Return to your lodge for (Overnight & Diner)
