How Long Does Gorilla Trekking Take?

Gorilla trekking takes about 2-3 hours on a normal trek but it can also take a full day depending on where the specific gorilla family you are tracking spend the night. Tourists are always advised to take packed lunch with them and plenty of drinking water just incase the trek takes longer than expected.

Day 1: Depart Kampala for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Your tour guide will pick you from your hotel in Kampala, very early in the morning to begin your trip to the Bwindi impenetrable Forest national park, home to half of the worlds endangered mountain Gorillas.

The drive from Kampala to Bwindi lasts for 8 hours, and you will therefore have several stopovers during the journey including a stopover at the equator where you will have an opportunity to take pictures and grab a few refreshments as well as African crafts which you can obtain from the local craft shops before hitting the road again.

The next stop will be in Mbarara town where you will have a lunch break. The guide will take you to one of the tourists restaurants in the town, with options of you trying local or continental dishes for lunch. After lunch, embark on your journey once more, proceeding directly to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest national park and direct to your lodge where you will check in for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Having dressed up accordingly to the trekking activity early morning breakfast will your packed lunch and water get to the park headquarters in time for briefing before you head on for the activity. then head into the forest to search for the mountain gorillas in the dense forested area with slippery slopes and the mist covered vegetation. After breakfast and briefing by park ranger guides, depart with picnic lunch boxes to start a 30 minutes – 8 hours trek to find the Mountain gorillas as you hike up and down slippery slopes with dense mist covered vegetation. The activity is surely strenuous but then again fully rewarding on sight of the huge gorillas, you will be able to take pictures and observe their various characters as they feed play and relate. Your allowed a full hour with these creatures and there after head back freshen up dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Drive from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park to Kampala

This day will mark the end of your three days safari. You will check out of the hotel with your back pack then embark on the journey to Kampala with a stopover at Igongo cultural center where you will have lunch and also take a mini tour in the center to know more about the Ankole culture. Then drive to Kampala it could be to the hotel or the airport in case you’re to catch your flight back.
